At St. Thomas of Canterbury Catholic Primary, our mission is to “Grow Together in God’s Love.”
This guiding principle shapes every aspect of our school life, especially our curriculum. Through our carefully designed curriculum offer, we strive to develop the skills, knowledge, understanding and learning attitudes of each child, empowering them to become the person God has uniquely called them to be.
By placing our mission at the heart of our curriculum, we ensure that Gospel values permeate every subject and learning experience. These values are not taught in isolation, but lived and learned across the school day, inspiring children to grow intellectually, morally, socially and spiritually.
To support this vision, we have developed a bespoke, whole-school curriculum built around the acronym GROWTH, which captures the heart of our mission and guides our approach to teaching and learning.
G – Gospel Values help us grow
R – Resilience to overcome challenge
O - Opportunity to shine
W – Wonder and Awe
T – Time to talk and collaborate
H – Holistic and inclusive
This curriculum is bespoke to suit our children, help them grow in God's love and to inspire them on their academic and personal journeys to become lifelong learners.
Every subject incorporates each element of the Growth curriculum which develops the spiritual, moral social and cultural awareness whilst at the same time helps them become the person they are called to be.
Throughout our Growth curriculum, there is a strong emphasis on the basic skills of speaking and listening, reading, writing and maths as we believe they are the building blocks to effective learning.
We prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of their future lives by helping them to understand their own and others’ rights. We emphasise the moral values of self-respect, respect for others, respect for property, building up of self-confidence and initiative, responsibility and self-discipline. We recognise that we are nurturing responsible citizens who can positively contribute to and make a difference to society.
When your child leaves this school, we want them to be confident and resilient learners and to understand the world they live in more fully. We want them to be able to express themselves confidently in a range of forms and be fully prepared for the next stage in their lives. We will work in partnership with parents and families to make this happen.
The school follows the National Curriculum for England.
