We would like to offer you a warm welcome to our page and to Year 1 at St Thomas of Canterbury Catholic Primary School.
We are excited to begin this journey with you and your child as they take their next steps into Key Stage 1. Year 1 is a year full of exploration, growth, and discovery. Your child will build on their early learning experiences through a rich and creative curriculum that supports their academic, emotional, and spiritual development.
As a Catholic school, we place Christ at the centre of all we do. We will support your child to grow in faith and love, learning from the teachings of Jesus and sharing these values in their everyday actions. We love to celebrate kindness, curiosity, and effort, and we work closely as a team to ensure that every child feels safe, supported, and ready to learn.
A key focus in Year 1 is developing a love of reading. We want all children to see books as a window to new ideas, adventures and knowledge. Through our Read Write Inc. phonics programme, we support children to become confident and fluent readers, giving them the tools they need to access the wider curriculum and find joy in reading.
